The Importance of Perfectly Painted Trim

Trim and millwork—your baseboards, door casings, crown molding, and wainscoting—act as the architectural frame for your home. Crisp, bright, and perfectly smooth trim provides a stunning contrast to your wall colors and elevates the entire perceived value of the interior.

However, painting trim is fundamentally different from painting drywall. Millwork takes constant abuse from vacuum cleaners, shoes, furniture, and pets. If a painter simply slaps standard wall paint onto a baseboard without proper preparation, it will instantly show brush strokes and begin peeling within weeks. At Coles Painting, we treat trim painting as a fine-finish specialty, utilizing high-adhesion primers and hard-curing enamels to guarantee a flawless, bulletproof finish.

Types of Millwork We Specialize In

Baseboards & Shoe Molding

The most abused woodwork in your home. We meticulously fill dents, caulk the seam where the wood meets the wall to eliminate shadow lines, and apply highly durable, scuff-resistant enamels that can withstand daily impacts.

Door & Window Casings

We ensure crisp, straight lines around all your doors and windows. If you have older, oil-based stained casings, we expertly degloss and prime them to seamlessly transition your home to a bright, modern white aesthetic.

Crown Molding & Wainscoting

Detailed millwork requires a careful hand. We use specialized fine-finish brushes and self-leveling paints to ensure that the intricate details and profiles of your crown molding and wainscoting are highlighted, not buried in heavy paint.

The Fine-Finish Prep Process

Perfect trim requires obsessive attention to detail before the paint can is even opened.

1

Floor & Wall Protection

Trim painting happens right at the edge of your carpets and hardwood floors. We precisely lay down heavy builder's paper and secure it with delicate-surface tape, ensuring zero bleed-through or accidental spills.

2

Deglossing & Sanding

New paint will easily peel off an old, shiny varnish. We wipe down all millwork with a deglosser to remove hand oils and grime, then mechanically sand the surfaces to create a microscopic texture for the primer to bond to.

3

Seamless Caulking & Patching

We fill all visible nail holes with wood putty and sand them flush. More importantly, we apply a fresh bead of flexible acrylic caulk along every single joint where the trim meets the wall, making the millwork look permanently "built-in."

4

Bonding Primer Application

If we are painting over raw wood or old dark stains, we apply a high-adhesion, stain-blocking primer. This step is critical to prevent wood tannins from bleeding through and turning your new white paint yellow.

5

Self-Leveling Enamel Finish

We apply top-tier waterborne alkyd enamels using fine-finish techniques. As the paint dries, it chemically self-levels, flattening out any brush strokes and curing into a smooth, hard-shell finish.

Technical Expertise

Wall Paint vs. Trim Enamel

A common mistake made by DIYers and cheap contractors is using standard interior wall paint (latex) on baseboards and doors. Wall paint is designed to be soft and flexible. If applied to trim, it remains sticky ("blocking"), collects dirt rapidly, and chips off the moment a vacuum cleaner bumps into it.

At Coles Painting, we exclusively use advanced Urethane Alkyd Enamels for all trim work. These hybrid formulas apply smoothly like water-based paint, but cure hard like a traditional oil paint. The result is a rock-solid, incredibly durable finish that can be scrubbed clean without wearing down.

Coles Fine Finish vs. Generic Painters

Project Aspect Coles Fine Finish Generic Painters
Paint Quality Hard-Curing Urethane Enamels Soft Latex Wall Paint
Visual Texture Self-Leveled / No Brush Strokes Heavy brush marks & roller stipple
Seam Caulking 100% Caulked to Wall Often skips caulking gaps
Nail Hole Patching Filled & Sanded Flush Painted over (holes remain visible)

Trim Painting FAQs

What type of paint is best for baseboards and trim?

Trim requires a durable, hard-curing finish because it takes a lot of abuse from vacuums, shoes, and pets. We exclusively use premium waterborne alkyd enamels or urethane-modified acrylics that self-level for a smooth finish and resist chipping and scuffing far better than standard latex paints.

Do you repair damaged baseboards before painting?

Yes. Our prep process is meticulous. We fill nail holes with professional wood filler, sand out deep scuffs, and apply flexible acrylic caulking to all seams where the trim meets the wall, ensuring a seamless, built-in look before any paint is applied.

Can you paint dark stained wood trim white?

Absolutely. Converting dark, dated wood trim (like 90s golden oak) to modern white is one of our specialties. We thoroughly degloss the wood, apply a high-adhesion, stain-blocking primer to prevent tannins from bleeding through, and finish with multiple coats of bright white enamel. It will completely transform the room.

How do you keep paint off my carpets when painting baseboards?

We use a specialized technique where we tuck wide, delicate-surface painter's tape slightly underneath the baseboard, pressing the carpet down. We then cover the rest of the floor with heavy paper. When the tape is pulled, the carpet springs back up, leaving a perfect, clean paint line with zero drips on your flooring.
